The following is my letter to the Egyptian Embassy:
Your Excellency,
I would like to add my voice to the chorus you are likely already hearing to ask your government to free the blogger Kareem Amer.
A truly strong nation need not fear the thoughts and writings of any person, and particularly one who does not encourage or incite violence. Egypt has a great history. As a proud nation and one which would like to continue to receive support from the United States, Egypt shames itself by such treatment of a young intellectual who poses no real threat to the government or society.
Jailing people for writing and thinking is the type of behavior we would expect from radical enemies of civilization such as Iranian President Ahmadinejad or the former Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, not from a country like yours with thousands of years of history including visionaries from Ramses to Sadat.
I encourage you in the strongest possible way to free Kareem Amer. It would be an action for which Egypt and Egyptians could truly be proud, and which Americans would honor and respect.
Most Sincerely,
Ross G Kaminsky
