Update on Sudan teddy bear hubbub: guilty!

I mentioned the other day that a British teacher in Sudan was going to be put on trial for letting her students choose the name "Mohammed" for a teddy bear.

They had the trial. The teacher was found guilty and sentenced to 15 days in jail and subsequent deportation. She could have gotten 40 lashes.

There is no other way to put it. Islamic fundamentalism is barbaric. The countries who follow islamic law are barbaric. We need to continue to do everything we can to keep their mental disease from spreading, just as we would with any other violent cult.

As heartfelt as the British indignation about this case might appear, the truth is this woman was lucky she was convicted in Sudan instead of her home country. Her penalty for the exact same offense would have been worse.

Yes, hard as it might be to believe, nanny state and political correctness gone mad are worse than Islamic fundamentalism.

You can do your own research about UK religious criticism (or as they like to call it, incitement to religious hate) laws. Here are a couple of starting points: http://www.adnkronos.com/AKI/English/Religion/?id=1.0.1375046496 and http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/4075442.stm (this latter article refers to a law which has since been enacted).

A relevant quote for you:

Existing offences in the Public Order Act 1986 legislate against inciting racial hatred. Jews and Sikhs have been deemed by the courts to be racial groups and are protected under this legislation, but other groups such as Muslims and Christians are considered to be religious rather than racial groups and have therefore not previously received any protection under the law.

The new Act will give protection to these groups by outlawing the use of threatening words or behaviour intended to incite hatred against groups of people defined by their religious beliefs or lack of belief.

Danish cartoons in the UK? No thanks. Not worth going to jail for.

It's a shame that the media doesn't cover the genocide perpetrated by the Sudanese government on its citizens with the same veracity as the teddy bear story.
